Alpine Inn

Some places earn their reputation through the food. The Alpine Inn earned its reputation through a half-century of cold beer, picnic tables under oak trees, and a patio full of people who can't think of anywhere they'd rather be. That's the whole pitch, and it's more than enough.

Locals still call it Rossotti's, the name it went by before the current owners took over, and the fact that the old name stuck tells you something about how deeply this place is embedded in the Peninsula's identity. It has been drawing cyclists off the trails, families out of the suburbs, and Stanford types down from the hills since the 1960s. The crowd changes by the hour but the vibe never does.

Why I Love It

This is a beer garden in the original sense: a large outdoor space where the point is to sit down, have a drink, and let the afternoon stretch out longer than planned. The patio holds around 250 people at peak, spread across picnic tables under a canopy of oaks, with the Santa Cruz Mountains as a backdrop. Nobody is in a hurry. That energy is contagious in the best way.

The food has gotten genuinely good in recent years. Wood-fired pizzas come out of a proper oven, the blackened salmon tacos have become a signature worth ordering, and the burgers are exactly what you want after a long ride. But it would be dishonest to say the food is why people drive out here. The setting is why people drive out here, and the food is a pleasant bonus.

What to Order

  • The blackened salmon tacos are a standout that surprises every first-timer.
  • Wood-fired pizza, best eaten at the table while it's still hot from the oven.
  • Burgers are a good call too.

Good To Know

  • Cash only, so plan ahead before you drive out.
  • Dogs are welcome on the patio, which makes this a rare find in the area.
  • Weekend afternoons fill up fast; weekday visits are quieter but equally good.
  • This is an outdoor-first operation, so check the weather before making the trip.
  • Not a quick stop. Plan to stay awhile. That's the whole point.
